An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a small, self-contained living space that is built on the same property as your home. They go by many names such as a carriage house, mother-in-law suites, granny flats, casitas, backyard cottages, garage apartments or basement apartments. ADU’s have grown in popularity as the Denver area has become crowded and space is limited. There has also become a significant need for affordable housing. The good news about ADU’s is they are a low impact way to expand housing options while providing a homeowner with another source of income. ADU’s can be rented out as a short term rental, like Airbnb. Or a long-term renter could occupy the space.
